SwitchArcade Roundup: ‘Framed Collection’, ‘Fear Effect Sedna’, ‘Subsurface Circular’ Review and More Nintendo Switch News

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Welcome to the latest SwitchArcade Roundup! We have a bunch of news pieces on the Framed Collection, some changes to the Nintendo points system, and a resolution to the play time bug. We’re also gonna run down why you should consider Subsurface Circular, and rundown the new releases, including Fear Effect Sedna, an unlikely revival of a 2000 PlayStation game that you probably forgot about until now. I know I hadn’t thought about Fear Effect in years, vaguely remembering it from video game magazines of the time. Remember those?

Framed Collection

Loveshack is bringing both Framed games to the Switch this spring as the Framed Collection. You rearrange comic book panels in order to help advance the narrative, and utilizing time loops in order to solve the puzzles presented. It’s a unique concept, and I think the Collection will be the ideal way to experience Framed. The first game came off to me as the first half of a larger whole, and the second Framed really made these ideas into a fully-formed experience. Switch owners should be excited for this one when it hits later this spring.

Diablo 3 actually coming to the Switch?

After Blizzard denied that Diablo 3 was coming to the Switch, the reliable Eurogamer’s sources say that no, it’s totally in development. Be optimistic, or who knows, maybe we’ll actually get a port of the PlayStation 1 version of Diablo. Blizzard’s out here keeping us on our toes.

Nintendo Points Update

Nintendo updated their My Nintendo Points scheme to make it so that you can earn points on digital purchases and then spend them on digital games. Game purchases earn points a 5% value of the purchase price, so a $ 13 game earns 65 coins, and each coin is worth about a penny. So you’d need to spend about $ 1200 in purchases to earn one free game. Also, points expire 12 months after you earn them, so this isn’t like Starbucks where points expire, but you at least have the ability to quickly earn a free drink. Instead, you can maybe pick up a lower-priced title for free every now and then. Nintendo might have special deals for gold coins: for example, there are some 3DS games available for a smaller number of coins than their retail value, and this could come to the Switch as well. You do have the ability to spend the coins on anything you want.

While there is some outrage over the perceived value of the program, the glass half-full interpretation is that other stores aren’t exactly giving you 5% back on all of your purchases and letting you then spend those on free games. If Nintendo is generous about giving players the opportunity to get gold coins outside of purchases, then this system might work out really well as a way to min-max game purchases on the Switch for those who don’t necessarily want to spend a lot of money.

Nintendo play activity bug

With the Switch’s first anniversary, some players noticed that the Switch stopped tracking their play time after one year of play. Nintendo recently clarified that this is just a display glitch, and the system is still accurately recording play data. A future system update will resolve this issue. So, if you lost your Breath of the Wild playtime, don’t worry…you can soon be reminded of just how many hours you’ve sunk into the game. Then you might beg to have the play time erased once more!

Game Spotlight: Subsurface Circular

If you’re looking for an interesting interactive fiction experience to play, check out Subsurface Circular. Developed by Mike Bithell, you play as a detective “Tek” robot, who has to investigate the disappearance of another Tek, all from their subway seat. See, this Tek is a detective whose purpose is to only ride the eponymous subway, and get to the bottom of anything strange going on with the subway. So as passengers come and go, you investigate their inquiries and find out just what is going on.

Subsurface Circular is a conversation-driven interactive fiction game that could’ve also been made in Twine, but it uses its visuals for the purpose of creating atmosphere. Characters that just play music loudly through their headphones wind up providing a very subtle soundtrack to the game. Plus, they accurately represent the experience of hearing people blasting music through their headphones. Use in-ear monitors, people – they’re smaller, isolate better, and don’t disturb your fellow subway riders. But the text and characterization goes a long way toward telling a story and creating a larger world despite your character never leaving their seat.

The best way to experience Subsurface Circular is like a movie, where you sit down to play through the entire thing in one go. It takes about an hour and a half or so, maybe longer if you struggle with some of the puzzles, though the game includes helpful hint options. It’s the kind of experience that felt like it was a lot lengthier than it actually was, and in a good way! It’s an incredibly engrossing experience. It’s well worth checking out.

New Releases

Fear Effect Sedna

The 2000 PlayStation horror-styled stealth-action series is back with a third game in the series. This is kind of a reboot as the series shifts from Chinese mythology to Inuit mythology, though it serves a sequel to an unreleased third title in the franchise. While the game’s new isometric perspective means that it’s quite different from the survival-horror perspective of the original titles, it’s not hard to believe that most people checking this out are new to the series, and are just looking for an interesting new title.

Scribblenauts Showdown

Scribblenauts keeps progressing from what was once a clever idea for a Nintendo DS game, to a full-fledged hit franchise. You’re still trying to create objects based on dictionary words to humorous results, but head-to-head play in dozens of minigames is the style here. Up to four players can face off with custom Scribblenauts, and while the party mode is the star of the show, there’s cooperative play in the Sandbox levels to enjoy as well.

We wrap up the week’s first set of new releases with this cyberpunk adventure game. You are a refugee applying for asylum in a futuristic mega-city, that also has monster-like creatures populating the landscape. The description says this is a straightforward game, full of “simple puzzles” and exploration, so this is more about getting engrossed in the world and its storyline rather than any kind of sizable open-world experience. It’s only $ 3, so give it a shot if you’re intrigued.

SwitchArcade Roundup: ‘Bayonetta 2’, ‘Fe’, ‘Subsurface Circular’, ‘Shaq Fu’, and More

Welcome to our SwitchArcade roundup of Nintendo Switch news, new release, and games on sale. We’re going to regularly post about important happenings in the Switch world, since we know a lot of you own the Switch to go along with your mobile devices. We’ll be compiling new game and content announcements, new releases you need to know about, and the sales you need to keep track of. Without further ado:

Nintendo Switch news

Subsurface Circular releases on Switch on March 1st

Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell’s third noteworthy game, Subsurface Circular, is going to hit the Switch on March 1st. It’s described as a single-session story, the first in a series of “Bithell Shorts.” It’ll only cost you $ 5.99 to play it, and you could theoretically save a dollar by buying it on iPad for $ 4.99 right now, but then you can’t play it on your Switch. I do wonder if Volume will ever hit the Switch…

New Shaq Fu coming to the Switch in spring with physical release

I don’t know if the world really needed Shaq Fu to come back. Shaquille O’Neal’s reputation somehow survived. Heck, it being so bad is why we remember it more than Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City, I suppose. Regardless, we’re getting Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, which appears to be more of a side-scrolling beat ’em up starring the Big Diesel rather than a head-to-head fighting game. This hits the Switch and other platforms this spring. Saber Interactive, developer of NBA Playground, also says that anybody who bought that game on the Switch prior to June 10, 2017 will get Shaq Fu for free.

New Switch releases

Bayonetta 1 & 2

Several of the Switch’s titles in the first year are simply ports or adaptations of great Wii U games that need a new audience. Bayonetta 2, the Wii U exclusive sequel to Platinum Games’ action game Bayonetta, sees a second life with a Switch release. The sequel in particular was really well-received. The games are $ 60 together, and the retail version comes with both games. but are available separately for $ 30 for the original Bayonetta, and $ 50 for the sequel, with discounts working out to where you can get both games for a combined $ 60 regardless of which game you buy first.

While it looks like an indie game, this title got a publishing deal from EA, of all companies, as part of their EA Originals series. The game is a beautiful 3D adventure, where you splay as the eponymous fox creature, trying to sing to creatures to help save the forest they reside in from evil robotic creatures. While early reviews are not fully positive, the game looks like an amazing visual experience.

Joe Dever’s Lone Wolf

The gamebook and action-RPG series makes its way to Switch after originally releasing on iOS and Android. It’s not perfect, but it’s got some good ideas going for it to make for an interesting experience, though the game is best experience in bite-sized chunks according to our reviewer, Shaun Musgrave.

Atooi brings its Steam and 3DS Metroidvania to the Switch. This is a solid few hours of chunky pixel art action, where you do the requisite ability collection as you explore four different planets. The Metroidvania genre is rapidly expanding on the Switch with titles like this and Dandara. It’s a solid platformer, especially if you like some of Atooi’s other titles like Mutant Mudds, and I do like that high-speed running from Super Metroid is involved here. It’s a solid little Metroidvania, and well apt for speedrunning.

Dragon Quest Builders

Do you really need another Minecraft clone in your life? Well, the difference here is that there’s a major singleplayer campaign to go along with all the creative stuff. That’s the thing about Minecraft, it requires a lot of self-direction, or at least the inspiration to go and do something, perhaps in one of the game’s many mods. But here, you can enjoy a singleplayer title in the blocky aesthetic, and then play through the Terra Incognita creative mode if your heart desires. There is a demo if you’re curious, and a sequel is set to release later this year.

Want to know why this title was so hyped to the point of getting the ultimate tribute: an Arby’s tweet? Just look at that pixel art. Have mercy. If you played Savant: Ascent and wanted more of that kind of art, you’ll love what Owlboy has going on. The game was in development for well over a decade, and saw a full release in 2016, with the Switch now getting the game. It’s only appropriate for a platformer that draws from the golden age of pixel art to be on a Nintendo system.

Noteworthy games on sale

NBA 2K18

(Base edition on sale for $ 38.99 from $ 59.99 until the 20th) This has become the premier basketball series by far, and is definitely challenging Madden’s long-running sports game dominance, thanks in part to the game’s custom player mode. That has expanded to such a degree that people are now playing 5-on-5 matches online with their custom characters, and there’s even an esports league, the NBA 2K League, in the works. Qualification is underway for that, and the Switch version isn’t being played professionally right now, but maybe next year it will? Maybe your esports career starts here. First step: get a microSD card so you can install the game.

Retro City Rampage DX

($ 9.99 from $ 14.99, sale ends on the 22nd) Never played this one on any platform, ever? It’s on pretty much every platform in existence, and now the Switch too! If you love 1980s references, you’ll love this, and there’s plenty of gratuitous pixel violence to enjoy as well.

Battle Chef Brigade

($ 17.99 from $ 19.99, sale ends on the 19th) – It’s not a huge discount, but if you’re curious to try this fantasy take on competitive cooking from the makers of Color Sheep, well, this is a good chance! The artwork by Eric Huang is absurdly good, and the entire game looks like a hand-drawn painting.

Axiom Verge

($ 13.99 from $ 19.99, sale ends on the 22nd) This is the Metroidvania that you need to play if you haven’t done so. The game definitely skews more Metroid than Castlevania in its art and gameplay. It’s more than just a Metroid homage, though: the game definitely makes its own mark on the genre with its design choices, and the soundtrack is quite the unique piece of work. Game developers should play this to know how to perfectly straddle the line between homage and creating a new work that stands on its own merits.

Jackbox Party Pack 4

($ 19.99 from $ 34.99, sale ends on the 22nd) I love that the makers of the You Don’t Know Jack trivia game series from a couple decades ago are not only surviving, but thriving as we get dangerously close to 2020. The Jackbox Party Pack games include a bunch of ridiculous party titles that involve trivia, creatively changing what your opponents say, and more. Everyone gets to play with their phones, so nobody has to touch your Switch. And, you don’t have to be near TV now to play these games! This pack on sale is a great starting point for the series. Friends not included.

Out Now: ‘Sheltered’, ‘Bury Me, My Love’, ‘Decap Attack’, ‘Afghanistan ’11’, ‘Battlevoid: Sector Siege’, ‘Heroes Fally’, ‘Subsurface Circular’, ‘ICEY’, ‘The Sun: Origin’ and More

It’s that time of week again when we round up all the best new iOS games of the past 7 days, and even though almost all of my attention is focused on impatiently awaiting Super Mario Odyssey’s release this Friday, there’s still a number of cool mobile games on my radar this week. The post-apocalyptic survival game Sheltered is high on my list, as is the latest Sega Forever release, the completely obscure but very Halloween-appropriate platformer Decap Attack. Plus there’s a handful of games that released earlier in the week that I’m still really enjoying, like ICEY and The Sun: Origin. So check out the full list of new games below and let us know which ones you’ll be picking up this week!

Robot detective game ‘Subsurface Circular’ is out on iPad

We've been excited about Mike Bithell's surprise indie game, Subsurface Circular, since it released months ago. The developer of Thomas Was Alone and Volume stealthily made the science fiction text adventure game for iOS after he asked Twitter follow…

Subsurface Circular is a good robot mystery game — but it could have been great

Subways are rich fictional landscapes. They’re an accessible and liberating system that’s also regimented and claustrophobic, their underground stations mundane during rush hour and eerie at midnight. That’s part of what attracted me to Subsurface Circular, a text adventure by Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell. It’s also what makes me wish that Subsurface Circular — a well-crafted little game that plays out like a short story — were so much deeper.

Subsurface Circular is set on an underground transit system for service robots in a future city. It’s a shortform mystery designed to be played over a couple of hours, as the protagonist, a robotic detective, attempts to solve the disappearance of a fellow passenger’s friend. Commuters…
