Report: There will be more than 125m connected vehicles by 2022

According to a new report, shipments of connected vehicles are expected to increase considerably over the next four years.

Counterpoint Research’s report forecasts a growth of 270 percent by 2022 to represent more than 125 million connected vehicles to be shipped from this year. As of 2017, the reporters found General Motors, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes Benz are currently leading the market.

All vehicles sold in Europe from April 2018 must be fitted with ‘eCall’ technology which automatically dials the 112 emergency number in the case of a serious accident. This will force all new cars sold in Europe to have at least a connected feature.

Hanish Bhatia, Senior Analyst for IoT & Mobility at Counterpoint, said:

“In terms of overall penetration, Germany, UK and US are leading the market at present with the highest percentage of total shipments with embedded connectivity sold in 2017.

Europe’s eCall mandate is expected to change the market dynamics with higher penetration across European countries. The adoption of eCall in Europe is expected to create ripples across other geographies thereby catalyzing the overall car connectivity ecosystem.”

Current implementations of connected vehicle services primarily use 2G/3G networks, but the market is moving quickly towards 4G.

Neil Shah, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, comments:

“We expect 4G LTE network to account for nearly 90% of connected passenger cars with embedded connectivity by 2022. Further, we expect 5G connectivity in cars to kick-in from 2020 onwards, however, the overall penetration is likely to remain low till 2022.

The progress on the levels of autonomous technology in a car will also dictate the usage of 4G or 5G technology embedded in the cars beyond 2022 when 5G coverage rollout becomes ubiquitous. Further, 5G NR (Standalone or SA) mode rollout which promises lower latencies will be critical for driving an inflection point in the commercialisation of autonomous cars later in the next decade.”

The uphill battle for automotive manufacturers will be convincing potential customers of the benefits of connected technologies. A recent study by Kantar TNS found that nearly half of connected car owners just don’tget’ the features at their disposal.

When asked what they want from their new car, most consumers will tell you ‘safety’ and ‘fuel economy’. Automotive manufacturers would do well to place a great emphasis on how connected features can help to improve these aspects of a new vehicle.

What Wasn’t Announced at Apple’s Event

Yesterday, we shared a video recap of everything Apple announced at its education-themed event, including a new entry-level 9.7-inch iPad, a new Schoolwork app for classrooms, and other education-related software updates.


Apple’s invite made it very clear that the event would be focused on education announcements, but there were still quite a few hardware and software possibilities that had a slim chance of being—but ultimately weren’t—mentioned:

  • Lower-priced MacBook Air: KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said a more affordable MacBook Air will launch in the second quarter of 2018. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the notebook probably wouldn’t be ready for Tuesday’s event, which proved to be the case.

    When to expect it: Apple has refreshed the MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro in April or May before, and announced the updates via press releases, so that’s one possibility. Otherwise, the new MacBook Air will likely debut at WWDC 2018 on June 4, near the end of the second quarter.

  • AirPower: A trio of reports claimed Apple’s multi-device charging mat will be available to order by the end of March. However, despite Apple’s online store going down ahead of Tuesday’s event, the AirPower wasn’t anywhere to be found when the site came back online.

    When to expect it: There are still two weekdays remaining in March, so there’s a possibility the AirPower could be added to Apple’s online store within 48 hours. Otherwise, the reports may have been off the mark. Apple has only confirmed that the AirPower will be available at some point in 2018.

  • A second-generation iPhone SE: Apple unveiled the current iPhone SE in March 2016, and given multiple rumors about a so-called iPhone SE 2, the new version could have debuted at the Chicago event. However, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had already cast doubt on the idea.

    When to expect it: A sketchy Chinese report recently claimed that Apple will unveil a new iPhone SE at WWDC 2018 in June. While certainly a possibility, Apple hasn’t introduced a smartphone at the event since the iPhone 4 in 2010. Beyond WWDC, a new iPhone SE could conceivably be announced in September alongside a new iPhone X and iPhone X Plus.

  • Gold or (PRODUCT)RED edition iPhones: Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang and Twitter account OnLeaks said Apple may release a (PRODUCT)RED edition of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and/or iPhone X. Ben Geskin and Japanese website Mac Otakara expect a gold iPhone X.

    When to expect it: On March 21, 2017, Apple unveiled a special (PRODUCT)RED edition of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. If it plans on doing similar this year, then perhaps we’ll see a wave of press releases highlighting availability of the new colors and the AirPower very soon.

  • iOS 11.3: Apple could have used its event to mention when the software update will be publicly released, but it elected not to do so.

    When to expect it: Apple said iOS 11.3 will be available in the spring, which began last week. There has already been six beta versions, and iOS 11.3 was released for the new iPad just hours ago, so it’s very likely the update will be available in a matter of days.

Teacher Reactions to Apple’s Event

Apple’s last education-focused event prior to Tuesday was in January 2012 in New York, where it announced iBooks 2 with interactive textbooks, iBooks Author, and a new version of iTunes U for iPad.


Just over six years later, many teachers and IT directors for school systems were eager to see what Apple had in store for them. And now that the event has concluded, many of those individuals have shared their initial thoughts, which aren’t entirely positive. We’ve rounded up some articles below:

Waymo Plans to Deploy The Largest Fleet of Autonomous Vehicles by 2020

Hypothetical bumper stickers from the year 2020: “AI, take the wheel!” and “How is my car driving?”

That is to say, autonomous cars are coming. And, in spite of some recent setbacks, it seems inevitable. Dozens of companies have poured millions of dollars (and several lawsuits) into their technology. Now one of the few questions still undecided: which company will dominate?

Alphabet spinoff Waymo is making a pretty serious bid for it. The company recently revealed an “electrifying partnership” (their words, not ours) with Jaguar Land Rover.

The self-driving car company plans to deploy up to 20,000 high-end vehicles by 2020. Compare that to its current fleet of 600 self-driving Chrysler minivans and you get a sense of the staggering scale (and pace) at which Waymo plans to level up.

The vehicle in question — a $ 69,500 Jaguar i-Pace announced earlier this month — brings the fight right to Tesla’s door. The Jag will appeal to an audience that has been salivating over Tesla’s most recent offerings, and cost almost $ 10,000 less than the Tesla Model X.

If Waymo succeeds, it will supplant General Motors, which hopes to produce a paltry 2,500 of its Cruise AV, its production-ready vehicle that features no steering wheel or pedals. But, importantly, GM might get there first — the company has filed for permission with the Department of Transportation in the hope of getting its Cruise AV on the road by 2019.

Might that progress be slowed in light of the recent fatal incident involving a self-driving Uber car and a pedestrian?

Waymo chief executive John Krafcik was quick to distinguish Uber’s cars from Waymo’s.

“…We have a lot of confidence that our technology would be robust and would be able to handle situations like that,” he said at a convention panel at the National Automobile Dealers Association.

Clearly, the incident isn’t slowing Waymo down. In fact, since Waymo is exempt from the Arizona governor’s ban on Uber’s AVs, it could even motor past the competition. Waymo’s competing ride-hailing service is set to launch in Phoenix, Arizona later this year, though the exact launch date and rates have not been announced.

We’ll see whether, in the end, Waymo’s Jaguar i-Pace proves more appealing or luxurious to consumers who don’t want to ride around in a Chrysler minivan. Let’s face it: minivans are not that cool, even if they are self-driving.

Arizona Bans Uber’s Autonomous Vehicles Following Pedestrian Death

Uber’s autonomous vehicles are no longer welcome in Arizona.

That’s according to the state’s governor Doug Ducey.

Around 10 PM on March 18, one of Uber’s autonomous vehicles struck a woman as she crossed a road in Tempe, Arizona. She later died from her injuries at a local hospital. This was the first time an AV caused a pedestrian fatality.

Yesterday, Ducey sent a letter to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi responding to the incident:

As governor, my top priority is public safety. Improving public safety has always been the emphasis of Arizona’s approach to autonomous vehicle testing, and my expectation is that public safety is also the top priority for all who operate this technology in the state of Arizona. The incident that took place on March 18 is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation…

In the best interests of the people of my state, I have directed the Arizona Department of Transportation to suspend Uber’s ability to test and operate autonomous vehicles on Arizona’s public roadways.

Immediately following the crash, Uber suspended all autonomous vehicle testing nationwide.

But what’s remarkable is that Ducey restricted the penalty to the one company responsible: Uber. Waymo, General Motors, Mobileye, and various other AV manufacturers are also testing in the state; in the wake of the pedestrian death, Ducey could have chosen to ban all AV testing outright. Instead, he chose to allow  to continue their testing in the state.

In fact, the other companies still allowed soon be able to take those test to the next level. Less than three weeks before the Uber incident, Ducey signed an executive order giving companies permission to test their AVs without a human driver behind the wheel.

It’s still possible that other states will suspend Uber, or other AV testing. But so far, fears that the incident would hinder the maturation of autonomous vehicle technology seem to be unfounded.

New Audi Vehicles Know How Long You’ll Wait at a Stoplight in DC

Sitting at a stoplight and waiting what seems like an eternity for it to change. What a drag.

Audi understands. Some of its newest models are equipped with a Traffic Light Information system that displays how long it will take a red light to turn green on the vehicle’s dashboard. Washington, D.C. became the most recent city in which this system works, joining Dallas, Denver, Houston, and Palo Alto.

But in the end, this system isn’t really for human drivers. It’s for autonomous vehicles.

The system is called Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I). Using 4G, the car connects to the area’s centralized traffic light management system to access information that could, for example, help navigation systems determine the most efficient route, or slow vehicles down when a light is about to change, as The Verge reports.

“This initiative represents the kind of innovation that is critical for us to advance the traffic safety goals of Vision Zero,” said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser in a press release. “We look forward to building on this and similar partnerships as we continue to build a safer, stronger, and smarter DC.” The partnership with Audi will also help the city to identify areas ripe for traffic improvement.

If people are going to move around stoplight-free cities in AVs, improving systems that allow the cars to talk to the infrastructure, and to each other, will be critical. Cars like Audi’s could go a long way towards bridging the gap between our past of traditional vehicles and our future of AVs.

BlackBerry, Jaguar Land Rover collaborate on next-gen vehicles

BlackBerry and Jaguar Land Rover have signed a deal to collaborate on the car giant’s next-generation vehicles.

BlackBerry has shifted its focus from mobile devices to software for the Internet of Things (IoT). Its focus has been on autonomous vehicles, with products ranging from fleet management tools to telematics devices.

The company has recently signed deals in the automotive industry with Baidu, Delphi, Denso, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Visteon.

BlackBerry infotainment

Under the terms of this new collaboration, BlackBerry will put its mobile expertise towards supporting the development of a next-generation infotainment system to be used in Jaguar Land Rover’s new vehicles.

The mobile software company will also license its QNX and Certicom technologies to Jaguar Land Rover, and send a team of its engineers to support the development of new Electronic Control Unit modules.

A focus on security

Dave Nesbitt, Jaguar Land Rover’s director of vehicle engineering, pointed to Blackberry’s reputation for secure software architecture as a factor in the decision to partner with the company. Earlier this year, BlackBerry launched Jarvis, a cloud-based cybersecurity product for the automobile industry.

“Working with BlackBerry will enable us to develop the safe and secure next-generation connected car our customers want,” he said. “Together with BlackBerry engineers, we will be able to access the most dynamic and up-to-date software to ensure the highest security required for our connected vehicles.”

BlackBerry’s SVP and general manager for QNX, John Wall, “We are at a pivotal moment, where innovative automakers, such as Jaguar Land Rover, are realising that they need to take an active role in defining the software architecture for their vehicles.”

“Connected and autonomous vehicles will react and drive based on rich data. Our platforms help process data efficiently and keep it secure and trusted. We are incredibly honored to work with Jaguar Land Rover and look forward to our teams working hand in hand to deliver an enhanced driving experience for their customers.”

Internet of Business

Even amongst the reams – or perhaps fleets – of connected and autonomous car announcements this year, the tie-up between BlackBerry and Jaguar Land Rover is a prestigious one. The car marque’s reputation for quality, and BlackBerry’s reputation for security and mobility, should make this one to watch.
