2. Retro Review: 2009 Mac Pro in 2018: iMore‘s Anthony Casella examines whether the 2009 Mac Pro, upgraded with dual Radeon RX 580 GPUs, is still a capable machine in 2018 compared to a 2014 iMac and entry-level iMac Pro, based on transcoding HD video, rendering video in Final Cut Pro, and gaming.

Casella notes that his article isn’t intended to be a scientific comparison, but rather more of a fun project to see if a nine-year-old workstation can still keep up in 2018, if someone were to have upgraded its components over the years instead of buying a whole new system. His answer is very much “yes.”

And yes I say that it can hang with the latest and greatest systems. In some areas, like with openCL computation, we made it insanely fast. Much faster than an iMac and an iMac Pro. It some areas it plays in the ball park like when transcoding videos. Others seem to show it’s age like when exporting Final Cut Pro videos but it does not show it’s age when using a FCP workflow like editing, transforming and scrubbing.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to adopt in-display fingerprint scanning: sources: “Samsung Display has prepared three or four solutions for Samsung Electronics to embed the fingerprint sensor inside of the main display, and both are seriously considering one of the solutions,” a source told The Korea Herald.

Samsung wouldn’t be the first smartphone maker to achieve the feat, as Chinese company Vivo released the X20 Plus UD with an in-display fingerprint scanner in January. The smartphone is the result of a collaboration between Vivo and Synaptics, which could also be working with Samsung for the Note 9.

Apple was widely rumored to embed Touch ID into the iPhone X’s display, but as it turned out, the company chose to ditch the fingerprint scanner entirely in favor of Face ID. And with a trio of new iPhone models with Face ID expected to launch later this year, it doesn’t look like Touch ID has a long future.

Following the 2015 terrorist shooting in San Bernardino, California, the FBI found itself unable to access a passcode protected iPhone 5c belonging to one of the shooters. Subsequently, the FBI asked Apple to create a custom version of iOS that would enable the bureau to enter in an endless number of passcode guesses, a request Apple outright refused.

Flash forward a few years, and the dynamics surrounding iPhone security have shifted dramatically. These days, most iPhones in use aren’t protected by a passcode, but by a fingerprint. Of course, with the introduction of Face ID last year, it won’t be long before most iPhones are protected by an individual’s face. In the interim, though, the vast majority of iPhones today are secured by Touch ID, a fact which, interestingly enough, has made it easier for law enforcement authorities to access a device belonging to a criminal or suspect who has died.

According a new report in Forbes, police and law enforcement officials have started accessing ostensibly locked devices with the fingerprints of dead owners.

Separate sources close to local and federal police investigations in New York and Ohio, who asked to remain anonymous as they weren’t authorized to speak on record, said it was now relatively common for fingerprints of the deceased to be depressed on the scanner of Apple iPhones, devices which have been wrapped up in increasingly powerful encryption over recent years. For instance, the technique has been used in overdose cases, said one source. In such instances, the victim’s phone could contain information leading directly to the dealer.

As for any legal hurdles which might prevent law enforcement from placing the finger of a dead individual on an iPhone, legal authorities claim that the dead do not enjoy a right to privacy. In other words, a search warrant to access the device of a deceased individual is not needed, though the ethical considerations of such a practice are reportedly a topic of fierce debate.

Thermal imaging company FLIR Systems has launched a traffic sensor designed to connect vehicles to smart city infrastructures. The thermal system will provide a line of communication for the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) market.

FLIR’s thermal cameras are often used to detect heat signatures from the air. For example, the company has a partnership with Chinese drone giant DJI to provide thermal imaging in support of precision agriculture, solar panel inspection, and search and rescue operations, among other applications.

FLIR’s V2X-enabled traffic sensor is a step towards embedding that data into urban infrastructures in a way that improves the safety of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

FLIR’s V2X Technology

According to FLIR, its V2X imaging technology will be one voice in the digital conversation between cars, other road users, and smart-city traffic infrastructures of the future.

FLIR’s ThermiCam V2X (pictured) could support a real-time collision avoidance system that accounts for the movements of all road users, said the company. It can be mounted onto existing traffic signals to read the heat signatures of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists at intersections.

The plan is for vehicles to transmit their speed and direction data over short distances. That information will be combined with FLIR’s ThermiCam V2X, which will communicate the presence of pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.

All of this data could help to warn drivers about dangerous situations before it is too late, or be incorporated into the actions of driverless systems.

FLIR’s thermal traffic management solution

Aside from preventing crashes, FLIR’s ThermiCam V2X can gather enough information to prioritise traffic signalling at busy intersections, making way for emergency vehicles or improving the general traffic flow.

“As car manufacturers design V2X technology into future vehicles, FLIR is being deployed today to ensure cities are ready for their arrival,” said James Cannon, President and CEO of FLIR.

“By detecting pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles in real time, while also enabling communication between vehicles and traffic infrastructure, FLIR ThermiCam V2X will play a critical role in improving the movement and safety of the world’s roads.”

The price to pay for V2X communications

As of yet, FLIR has not provided any details on how its V2X technology will be secured. Clearly, any move to connect the previously unconnected opens the doors to cybersecurity risks.

ABI Research last year estimated that roadways will account for the majority of cybersecurity spending in the transport sector, with $ 5 billion expected to be invested by 2022.

At the time, research director at ABI, Michela Menting, pointed out that, “While the transportation sector places heavy reliance on functional safety and physical security, the cyber protection of connected operational technologies is currently inadequate and will require some significant work.”

“Transport stakeholders will have to implement digital security if they want to successfully realise the efficiencies and cost savings that connected OT promises to deliver.”

FLIR will demonstrate the ThermiCam V2X sensor at Intertraffic 2018 in Amsterdam.

Wayfair’s Android app now lets you shop for furniture using augmented reality

AR-enabled shopping is expanding again today. This time, online furniture retailer Wayfair is introducing an augmented reality feature in its mobile app for Android that will allow customers to visualize furniture in their own home ahead of purchase, just by holding up their smartphone.

The feature, called “View in Room 3D,” was previously available on iOS, leveraging Apple’s AR platform ARKit.

Now, Wayfair is taking advantage of Google’s ARCore to offer the same option to Android users.

ARCore, Google’s answer to Apple’s AR platform, was publicly released last month, giving developers a way to integrate AR technology into their Android applications, where they can reach a potential audience of over 100 million Android devices.

Wayfair is not the only shopping site to quickly roll out ARCore support now that it’s available – eBay yesterday launched a feature for sellers that helps them find the right shipping box using AR technology, and promised other AR-enabled features this year. IKEA also just released an Android version of its AR app IKEA Place this week.

Other retailers have been experimenting with AR, as well, including Amazon and Target.

Retailers’ interest in AR is not just because it’s new and trendy – it can help them address the real issue that online shoppers face, when trying to buy furniture from a website, instead of in person.

It’s often difficult for non-designers to really get a sense of what a piece of furniture will look like when placed in the room. Will the new sofa go well with the existing curtains, carpet, and other furniture? Will it fit in the space?

Wayfair’s app helps with those questions, as it projects the furniture or décor in 3D at full-scale, and anchors them to the floor. This lets shoppers see if the object in question fits in the room – without needing to break out their measuring tape. It also helps them get a visual sense of what the room will look like with the new furniture added.

And because the image is in 3D, you can walk around it to see it from different sides – which also helps with consumers’ buying decisions.

“Leveraging augmented reality, the Wayfair app allows shoppers to transform their homes into virtual showrooms, allowing them to see their favorite products up close and at every angle – all in their very own space,” said Steve Conine, co-founder and co-chairman, Wayfair, in statement about the AR feature’s release.

“We knew early on that augmented reality had the potential to completely transform the way people shop for their homes, and as it’s quickly moved toward mainstream adoption, we’re excited to have played an integral role in shaping the experience for millions of shoppers,” he added.

Furniture has been one of the more difficult businesses to transition online, not only because of shipping costs for heavy items, but also because consumers still often want to see the products in real life. They want to touch the fabric, try out a chair’s cushions for comfort, and see the true colors – not just an online photo.

But things are changing, as more commerce shifts online – the channel that’s prefered by millennial shoppers, who are now the largest demographic (37%) of the furniture-buying market.

Wayfair is one of the companies capitalizing on this shift, to the tune of $ 4.7 billion in net revenue in 2017.

And with the elimination of the furniture showroom, it’s also been quick to jump on new technologies to help its customers better shop, including web-based clipboardsvisual search, mobile messaging, and now, AR – all which give it a competitive advantage versus traditional retailers with more static sites.

The company also recently updated the AR feature in the iOS app that lets customers now record a video of the item in AR, instead of just taking a photo. This feature has a Snapchat-like feel, as you just press and hold the record button to make the recording. You can then walk around the furniture in the video, in order to capture it in 3D then share with friends and family.

This feature will arrive in the Android version soon, we understand.
