T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is getting the Oreo update

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Samsung recently promised to speed up its Oreo rollout, and it appears to be doing just that. After pushing Oreo out to several more Note 8 and GS8 variants, the time has come for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S8 Active to get a taste of Oreo. The update was approved on March 29th, but it seems to have only started hitting phones in the last day or so.

The latest update comes with baseband version number G892USQU1BRC4.

AT&T Galaxy S8 Active now receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

All four major US carriers have now rolled Android 8.0 Oreo out to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but we hadn’t heard much about the often-forgotten third sibling, the Galaxy S8 Active. That changes now, as AT&T has become the first carrier to roll Oreo out to the rugged S8.

Software-wise, the S8 Active’s 1.2GB update should be bringing the same changes as its glass-backed brethren. That means regular Oreo stuff like picture-in-picture, autofill, and notification dots, as well as Samsung-exclusive changes such as Dual Messenger and App Pair.

Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8 Always On Display update brings GIF support

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are the company’s latest flagships and these phones come with some impressive features that aren’t present on the 2017 flagships. However, today the company is pushing one such feature to S8 and Note8 flagships. Samsung has released an update to the Always On Display (AOD) on the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note8 that adds support for using GIF. The update lets you add a little action to the otherwise-dull clock and time Always On Display. Samsung allowed you to add themes and photos, but GIF is the latest update. You can either chose from a list of Samsung defaults or upload one from Gallery. Since we are talking about GIF, it shouldn’t be long and you can trim it from the gallery. The GIF won’t play for long, it just plays once when you turn the display off. If you wish to see the GIF again, just double-tap-on the screen. This limitation is put forth to reduce battery consumption. To get the new Gif animation feature, you will have to update the Always on Display from ‘My Apps’ and once you’ve updated, you will need to select the particular clock style that shows images on the display. …

Apple brings official support for external GPUs to macOS in new update

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Apple external GPU support

Apple introduced support for external GPUs on macOS High Sierra this week, months after revealing it would do so at WWDC 2017 last summer. Rolling out earlier this week, the macOS 10.13.4 update gives Mac users with Thunderbolt 3 ports the ability to enhance the graphical performance of their machines by connecting a variety of external graphics processors. This can open the door to 3D and VR gaming, even on a relatively weak machine.

Apple lists several supported eGPU configurations on its website, highlighting several AMD Radeon cards such as the RX 570, RX 580 and RX Vega 56. Apple also notes that you’ll need a Thunderbolt 3 chassis to sufficiently power your card, so it’s not as simple as plug-and-play (though that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise).

Apple warns that eGPUs are only supported on MacBook Pro notebooks released in 2016 or later, iMac computers released in 2017 or later, and the iMac Pro. You also need to have the latest version of macOS High Sierra installed on your machine, so be sure to update before you try plugging in an external processor.

Here’s everything Apple says you can do once you update to macOS 10.13.4 on a supported machine:

  • Accelerate applications that use Metal, OpenGL, and OpenCL
  • Connect additional external monitors and displays
  • Use virtual reality headsets plugged into the eGPU
  • Charge your MacBook Pro while using the eGPU
  • Use an eGPU with your MacBook Pro while its built-in display is closed
  • Connect an eGPU while a user is logged in
  • Connect more than one eGPU using the multiple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on your Mac2
  • Use the menu bar item  to safely disconnect the eGPU
  • View activity levels of built-in and external GPUs. Open Activity Monitor, choose Window > GPU History.

If you’re at all uncomfortable using an eGPU, be sure to read Apple’s support page before you plug one in.

Razer Phone will get Android 8.1 Oreo update in April

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Razer Phone hands-on video

The Razer Phone launched late last year with Android 7.1 Nougat, and owners may be wondering when they’ll get their Oreo update. Today Razer shed some light on its update plans.

Razer says that it plans to skip Android 8.0 and go straight to Android 8.1 on the Razer Phone. The update will launch in mid to late April.

If you don’t feel like waiting a month to get Oreo on your Razer Phone, you can try the update right now by flashing Razer’s Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview. Keep in mind that flashing this factory image will wipe all of the data on your Razer Phone and that, because this is pre-release software, the update will contain bugs.

Also of note is that the Android 8.1 Developer Preview may not contain all carrier-specific features like VoLTE, enhanced voicemail, and Wi-Fi Calling support. Finally, there will be no over the air (OTA) updates for the official Android 8.1 Oreo release. So if you flash this Developer Preview, you will have to also manually flash the official Android 8.1 release when it becomes available.

Some Razer Phone owners may be frustrated about waiting another month for their Oreo update, but at least then they’ll be on the absolute latest and greatest version of Android. It’s good to see Razer being transparent about its update plans and even offering a preview of its Android 8.1 update for developers and eager Razer Phone owners that don’t mind dealing with some bugs in exchange for getting to try their Oreo update early.

[Update: Go apps too] Play Store now recommending lite apps to some users

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Over the past year or two, we’ve seen a rise of ‘lite’ apps – lightweight alternative applications for popular services. Facebook Lite, Skype Lite, and Twitter Lite are just a few examples. But it’s not always obvious to users that these alternatives exist, unless they happen to appear high up on Play Store search results.
