This game turns a trek across America into a surreal exploration of storytelling

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Trekking across the flat, largely empty plains of Midwestern America is exhausting. There isn’t much to see, and while the occasional car passes me by, no one seems willing to pick me up — which may have something to with the fact that I’m a giant skeleton with a rucksack over my shoulder. But I press on, the twang of some uplifting folk tunes in my ears, and eventually stumble across a seemingly abandoned farmhouse. Good thing, too, because it starts to rain. But when I head inside for shelter, it turns out I’m not alone; in each corner of the barn, there is a man, each identically dressed, staring at me in complete silence. Eventually, I fall asleep, and when I wake up they’re all gone, along with all my cash.

It’s a terrifying way to…

‘Star Trek Discovery’ failed to do what good sci-fi does

This article contains mild spoilers for the first season of 'Star Trek Discovery'. At its best, science fiction does more than just entertain, or ensure its cliffhanger is strong enough that you come back next week. The cool spaceships and robots ar…

These three shows are reinventing the legacy of Star Trek

2016 might have been Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, but 2017 was the year when no less than three shows reinterpreted, reimagined, or paid homage to Gene Roddenberry’s classic science fiction series. Each one follows the show’s familiar blueprint, joining the diverse crew of a starship as they zip around the universe. But each show also has their own new take on what Star Trek means, taking the classic form of the franchise and molding it in some new ways.

Star Trek: Discovery, the first official Star Trek show in over a decade, launched last fall on CBS, while Seth McFarlane’s interplanetary comedy The Orville debuted on Fox. And then there was Black Mirror’s dark take on the franchise in the episode “USS Callister.”

“USS Callister” is…

‘Star Trek: Bridge Crew’ drops its VR headset requirement

There's no question that Star Trek: Bridge Crew benefits from VR — it helps fulfill that fantasy of helming a starship. Most people don't have the VR headset you need to play the game, however, which makes gathering a crew rather difficult. Red Stor…

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is no longer VR-only

The formerly VR-only Star Trek: Bridge Crew will now work on traditional screens. In addition to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR, people can now play it on PlayStation 4 and PC after a free update — instead of hand controls, you can use either a controller or a mouse and keyboard. The cooperative game is still cross-platform, so you can staff a ship with the same people inside or outside VR.

Publisher Ubisoft released Bridge Crew in May to strong reviews, following the company’s earlier VR titles Eagle Flight and Werewolves Within. It’s been praised for its motion controls, which let four players “realistically” pilot a starship, beam passengers aboard, and fight enemy ships as a united crew. But it’s fundamentally about…

Quentin Tarantino might be making a Star Trek movie

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is known for his love of genre movies, and now it looks like a Star Trek film may be in his future. Deadline is reporting that Tarantino is working with producer J.J. Abrams on his own original idea for a Trek film, which he could potentially direct.

According to the report, Tarantino pitched his idea to Abrams, and the current plan is for the pair to assemble a writer’s room of screenwriters who will then develop the concept into a screenplay. Handing off writing duties would appear to be a good fit for both filmmakers given their current schedules: Tarantino is about to start shooting his next movie, a drama set in Los Angeles around the time of the Charles Manson murders, while Abrams is diving into Star…
