French tech company Archos just released a new rugged phone – the Saphir 50X. That sentence does, however, require some clarification. When we say “released”, we really mean commissioned from Logos Instrument, since Archos doesn’t really manufacture most of its products. That’s not the odd bit here – curiously, the Saphir 50X is a new release, but it is actually a downgrade over last year’s Archos 50 Saphir. The two phones share the exact same rugged and rough body, measuring 146.6 x 76 x 13 mm. They have the same IP68 ingress certification rating and also share a 5-inch HD LCD,…

Remember the Galaxy Tab Active 2? Samsung introduced this rugged Android tablet back in October 2017, and at the time, the company only said that it’d be available in select markets. Fast-forward several months and it turns out that the U.S. is one of those markets.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 is now available in the U.S. Pricing is set at $ 419.99 for the Wi-Fi-only model and $ 519.99 for the unlocked 4G LTE version.
One of the highlight features of the Galaxy Tab Active 2 is its rugged body. The shell includes a 1.2m anti-shock protective cover, and the tablet is MIL-STD-810 certified, which means it can handle extreme low pressure, high altitudes, extreme temperatures, dust, and more. It’s also IP68 water resistant, meaning it can withstand being submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes.
The Galaxy Tab Active 2 also comes with a ruggedized S Pen stylus that’s also IP68 water and dust resistant. You can even use the S Pen while the tablet’s screen is wet.
Other specs of the Galaxy Tab Active 2 include an 8-inch 1280×800 display, octa-core Exynos 7870 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, microSD card slot, and a 4,450mAh battery. It runs Android 7.1 Nougat and includes Samsung additions like QuickStart management software and Knox security software.
The rugged Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 tablet launched in Europe late last year and has now arrived in the US. The tablet is priced $ 420 (was 500 in Europe) and comes with 3GB of RAM and 16GB storage. You can find it on Samsung.com. There is an LTE version as well, though we don’t have a price for it yet. The tablet is build for hard working environments. It is IP68-rated and MIL-STD-810 certified. It sports a ruggedized S Pen that works even when the screen is wet and can be used with thick gloves. The tablet could be put on a “professional-grade” vehicle mount and charged via the…
Japanese power tools manufacturer Makita has released a new rugged coffee maker that runs on battery power. The CM501DZ uses the same lithium ion battery packs as various Makita tools; the company says the largest 18V BL1860 battery is good for brewing about 640ml, or 5.3 cups.
Makita released its first cordless coffee maker a few years ago, and naturally now also sells various flavors of coffee pods for the machines. You can, however, use them with regular ground coffee, in case you want to brew artisanal blends in the middle of nowhere.
The Asahi Shimbun says Makita expects the new model to be popular with construction workers on building sites. I expect it to be popular with me on my apartment’s roof. It’s out now in Japan for…
