Meizu to launch a new M-series phone on May 23

We got word that the Meizu will unveil a new phone in a matter of days. Details are scarce at this point but it’s clear we’re talking about a device that has affordability as its main focus. Meizu is also adopting a new strategy this time around – perhaps to allow for an even cheaper price point. The device will only be available on sale through online channels and will not be available in brick-and-mortar stores. Ard Boudeling, head of Meizu’s Global Marketing, had this to say, regarding the upcoming launch: “Up until 2015, we had never launched a phone below $ 275. Making a phone…

Twitter warns Vine users that email addresses and phone numbers were exposed

Vine as we once knew it has already been shut down, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean the information you provided to the Twitter-owned company is secure. Twitter just sent out a mass email to Vine users alerting them of a “bug” that briefly allowed third parties to view email addresses and phone numbers associated with Vine accounts. If you get the email, your information was likely exposed — though that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s being misused by anyone. The company makes no mention of any passwords having been exposed during the window that it claims lasted “less than 24 hours.”

The bug affected the Vine Archive, which the company describes as a “time capsule” (perhaps graveyard?) of all Vines that were uploaded with the…

Eye iPhone case that doubles as an Android phone raises over $600,000 via Kickstarter

There are tons of cases for the various iPhone models, including some that can double as an extra battery. However, a company called ESTI wants to release an iPhone case that also doubles as a full Android smartphone. The Eye case has already raised well over $ 600,000 via Kickstarter, far above its original $ 95,000 goal.

ESTI says the Eye iPhone case will have an Android 7.1.1 Nougat phone on the back that includes a 5-inch AMOLED display with a 1,080 x 1,920 resolution. Inside, the Eye case will have a MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core processor, 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of onboard storage, with a microSD card slot to add up to 256 GB of additional storage. It also will have dual SIM slots, a 3.5 mm earphone jack and a 2,800 mAh battery, with an accessory planned that will boost the battery size up to 10,000 mAh. The case will also support NFC and wireless charging features.

The Eye case is being made for all iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 models, but customers have the option to wait until the next iPhone arrives later this year to get the case made for those versions. The Kickstarter campaign has less than a day to go before it ends, as of this writing, and backer prices for the case starts at $ 119 for a non-4G model, with higher prices if you want the case to have more onboard storage or 4G connectivity. The first shipments for the Eye case are supposed to start in August 2017.

While the prospect of having a full Android Nougat phone on the back of an iPhone sounds cool, we do have to wonder if it will really work as advertised when it begins shipping. Then we will see if it is really a useful product, or just another Kickstarter project that failed to meet expectations.
