Motorola’s excellent track record with updating devices fell by the wayside as it became part of Lenovo and started releasing more device variants than anyone can keep track of each year. Nothing is better proof of that than the Moto G4 Play’s situation. The device, which was released on September of 2016, has been stuck on Marshmallow 6.0.1 for months and months as owners gave up on even getting an update.

Verizon Droid Maxx 2 updated to… Android 7.0 Nougat

The Moto X Play was released in 2015, as a larger version of the X Style with a much bigger battery. In the United States, it was rebranded to the ‘Droid Maxx 2,’ a Verizon exclusive. Both models shipped with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and were later updated to Marshmallow. The Moto X Style received Android 7.1.1 Nougat in September of last year (at least in India), but the Maxx 2 has been stuck with 6.0.

Verizon’s Motorola Droid Maxx 2 gets updated to Android 7.0 Nougat

Earlier today we told you that Samsung is finally releasing the update to Android 8.0 for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and it’s pretty late to the Oreo party at this point. Still, that’s quite an achievement compared to the Motorola Droid Maxx 2 for Verizon. This particular handset is now receiving an update to Android 7.0 Nougat. That’s an iteration that’s almost one and a half years old at the moment, so to call this update long overdue would be a huge understatement. And it’s especially true given that the Moto X Play, in effect the international variation of the Droid Maxx 2, first tasted…

Nougat finally becomes the most popular Android version just as Oreo passes 1% of the market

Google has published its monthly analysis of Android market share today, and we have some big news. For the first time in history, the most used version of the OS is now Nougat – which launched in August of 2016, almost 18 months ago. It takes the crown from Marshmallow, in fact its predecessor. Nougat is now at 28.5% of the pie (up from 26.4%), while Marshmallow dropped to 28.1% (from 28.6% last month). Lollipop completes the podium, still commanding 24.6% of the market at this time. While all the older versions of the OS lost market share, Oreo is still gaining. At the same…

Android Nougat is officially the most-used version of Android

Android 7.0 Nougat has finally become the most-used version of the mobile operating system, running on 28.5 percent of devices (across both versions 7.0 and 7.1), according to an update on Google’s developer portal today (via 9to5Google).

That number narrowly edges out the second most-used version of Android, 6.0 Marshmallow (released in 2015), which still stands at 28.1 percent. As for Google’s latest 8.0 Oreo update released last fall? Adoption comes in at just 1.1 percent of Android devices, leaving it in a distant sixth place. Still, it’s an improvement over the 0.2 percent of devices that were running Oreo by October 2nd, 2017.

Android devices have always suffered from fragmentation when it comes to software updates. For a lot of…
