Motorola event large

Motorola recently said that its first new phones of 2018 will be shown in April, and now it looks like we may know exactly when those devices will debut.

Motorola is sending Save the Dates to an event on April 19. AndroidPIT got hold of the invitation, which reveals that the event will be held in São Paulo, Brazil. The invitation also includes the phrase “helloyou”.

What the invitation doesn’t say is what Motorola is planning to show at this event. One possibility is the Moto G6, which is expected to have Plus and Play variants. It’s now been a little more than a year since the Moto G5 debuted, so the time is right for another entry is Motorola’s line of affordable Android smartphones.

Moto G5 Plus hands-on video

We’ve seen a few leaked Motorola devices so far in 2018, but now official announcements from Moto. It looks like that’ll change in April.

Motorola has teased that it’ll announce its first new products of 2018 in April. The company today revealed that its president, Aymar de Lencquesaing, will leave the company and be replaced by Sergio Buniac. At the end of this announcement, Moto dropped the following teaser:

“We’re excited for what 2018 (and beyond!) is going to bring us and look forward to sharing our first products of the year with you next month!”

We’ve seen a few different Motorola devices leak so far in 2018, ranging from the higher-end Moto Z3 to the mid-range Moto X5 down to the more entry-level Moto G6 Play and Moto E5 Plus. It’s unclear exactly what Motorola plans to show off next month, but the company is now a little more than a year out from its introduction of the Moto G5, so perhaps a new Moto G model will be one of the new pieces of hardware that debuts next month.

Motorola hasn’t been doing well lately. Several planned phones have seemingly been delayed or cancelled, and half of the company’s engineering team in Chicago was laid off earlier this month. While Oreo has yet to be released for the company’s 2016 flagship (at least beyond carrier testing), developers can now download the updated kernel source code.

If you’re not familiar with how this works, the Linux kernel that Android uses falls under the GPL license.

Motorola is more at risk of becoming irrelevant than ever – can it be saved?

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Motorola is in trouble. As it has been, frankly, for much of the past five-plus years. The Lenovo-owned smartphone brand once known for its positively prodigious portfolio hasn’t announced a new phone in well over six months. That was the Moto X4, which received a mixed reception and has gone on discount so frequently of late that it seems poor sales are probably a given (granted, it’s horrendously overpriced). But the X4 was never really competitive in its segment, and its reason for existence remains something of a mystery to me.
