Game and Fan Reaction Video from A Celebration of Harry Potter 2018

Last month I did a hands-on with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery and I came away pretty impressed. It offers a casual Harry Potter choose your own adventure experience that will have you entering into your first year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Watch ‘Harry Potter’ Actors, Fans Get Hype About ‘Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery’

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

We’re still not 100 percent sure when Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is going to be gracing our phones and tablets, though it’s already made it’s first cautious inroads toward release. In the meantime, Jam City has been doing an excellent job keeping the hype train to the Wizarding World fully fueled so we can all hop on at Platform 9 3/4 when the time arrives.

The company’s latest effort, which you can see below, is a video of fans getting their hands on Hogwarts Mystery (before you, but hey) at the A Celebration of Harry Potter event in Orlando back at the end of January. Now granted, there’s a certain home field advantage element to the reactions of people playing the game given the nature of the event, but it’s pretty clear that the attendees are pretty psyched about being able to create their own wizard or witch and sending them to Hogwarts.

Oh, and if you’re even the least bit observant, you’ll notice the familiar faces of actors from the Harry Potter movies getting to experience an early build of the game as well.

The video doesn’t show off too much in the way of gameplay, though previous videos have given more of a peek behind the curtain in that regard, and there are gameplay videos out there from people who have been playing the game in soft launch too. One thing that comes across in this latest clip is how much players enjoy interacting with the characters they know and love from the books and movies, and that might ultimately be what sets Hogwarts Mystery apart from other Harry Potter games, including the upcoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

In any case, we’ll send out an owl the next time there’s a video or more word on a release date, and if one of the Weasleys wants to help us get some hands-on time in the interim, we wouldn’t say no.

New ‘Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery’ Trailer Released, Reveals More Wizarding Tricks

How Complete Beginners are using an ‘Untapped’ Google Network to create Passive Income ON DEMAND

Everywhere you look these days, there’s that wizard with the scar, Harry Potter, and it doesn’t look like that’s changing any time soon. As you probably already know if you’ve been reading our stories, we are getting a brand new Harry Potter game called Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, and today we got to see a new trailer that shows a lot more gameplay than previous teasers have. Whether you’ll like what you’ll see really depends on what kind of a game you’re looking for. This one is free-to-play, and that can go a few different ways if previous experience with games like this one is anything to go by. Harry Potter is Harry Potter, though, and there’s definitely a huge audience waiting to find out more about Hogwarts Mystery—unless, of course, you’re one of those who have gotten their hands on the soft launched Android version.

A few words about Hogwarts Mystery, first. Even though the game has Harry Potter in the title, you won’t actually play as the titular (and grand example of how PTSD looks like) character; instead, you’ll get to create your own witch or wizard, the first mobile game that lets you do so (as the developers proudly proclaim). To quote a famous TV persona, you get a Hogwarts letter, and you get a Hogwarts letter, and you get a Hogwarts letter. You can see that aspect of the game right at the start of the trailer, which shows how Hogwarts Mystery keeps all that is known and loved about the world of Harry Potter—the school buildings, the professors, etc—but puts you right at the center of the wizarding world. You even get to pick which House you’ll join (Ravenclaw forever), which probably has some gameplay implications.

This narrative adventure with RPG elements will, of course, let you make your own student avatar as you always dreamed your Hogwarts self to be, and then will have you entering the usual Hogwarts routine of learning new magical skills, attending all kinds of classes—which I’m sure is the way to leveling up—forming friendships with those that share your beliefs and making enemies of all the rest, and so on. The game does comes with a story arc that will change according to your decisions at crucial moments—like whether to drink that third butterbeer or whether to call it a night. Hogwarts Mystery has a new encounter system where your decisions and actions impact your quests—although it’s not yet clear precisely how they impact them—which should help you feel like your actions actually matter. Prophecy or not, you will rise to fulfill your destiny.

Speaking of rising, Hogwarts Mystery is a free to play game, so that rising might contain plenty of timers (fame requires patience) and IAPs (fame doesn’t come cheap). As the trailer demonstrates, you get to master different spells and potions, and I have a hunch that mastery will be peppered with timers. The content has to be gated somehow, otherwise players will go through everything Hogwarts Mystery has to offer faster than Hermione can cast a spell.

Still, free to play or not, it’s not often we get to play games set in the world of Harry Potter, so I think many of you will definitely check the game out. It does come with a brand new storyline all about the Cursed Vaults and your brother’s disappearance. Whether the monetization will get in the way of the fun remains to be seen, but I, like Ron after a few butterbeers, remain optimistic.

The game has been available in early access on Google Play for some time now, but now you can officially go to the game’s website and pre-register (which, again, you probably already have done given that the link has been around for a month or so). If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, are you looking forward to getting to enjoy a brand new adventure in the halls of Hogwarts, or is the monetization model your own personal Boggart?

[Hands-on] Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, a solid choose your own adventure that gets the job done

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery may not be the first officially licensed Harry Potter game on Android, but it’s probably going to be the most popular, at least until we see what Niantic has up its sleeves for their upcoming augmented reality title Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Only just recently has Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery arrived on the Play Store as a soft-launch title, which means it’s getting close to an official release.

‘Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery’ Soft Launches on the Google Play Store

We’ve been keeping a close eye on Jam City’s Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery ever since we first got word of it last December and saw its first trailer launch just last week. As a game that has you creating a student avatar and taking that character through the first four years of a Hogwarts education, Mystery has at the possibility of being a interesting game simply from the standpoint of exploring the Harry Potter canon in a new way. Besides anytime someone describes the gameplay as potentially combining the amazing IP of Harry Potter with the student-based adventures from games such as the likes of Bully, I always perk up.

Well, for folks that have an Android device, you may have the opportunity to check out the game even sooner than the rest of mobile players. We noticed recently that the game has now appeared on the Google Play Store with the soft launch moniker of being ‘an unreleased app.’ Checking out the information on the Play store it looks to be a free title with IAP ranging from $ 0.99 to $ 99, which sure seems like premium currency buys to me.

While I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and I’ll certainly check out Hogwarts Mystery when it comes out, the apparent freemium underpinnings always mean that I’ll have to approach the game with a cautiously optimistic standpoint. Obviously, the folks at Jam City are seem to be approaching their game design with a careful eye as well since a soft launch will allow the developers to fine-tune and adjust the game until they get it right. Regardless, for folks with an Android device, you may want to check out the soft launch if you want an early preview of what Hogwarts Mystery has to offer. For the rest of us, be sure to pre-register at the official website, check out its first trailer embedded above, and be sure to stick with us as we continue to monitor this latest venture into the vast world of Harry Potter.
