Out Now: ‘Alto’s Odyssey’, ‘Dice Brawl: Captain’s League’, ‘Birdy Trip’, ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’, ‘Glitch Dash’, ‘Dissembler’, ‘Up a Cave’, ‘SiNKR’ and More

It’s yet another week in the never ending cycle of new games flooding the App Store, and as always we’re here to round up the best of the lot. This week sees the release of a highly-anticipated follow-up to one of the App Store’s all-time greats, and that is the beautiful Alto’s Odyssey. One thing I’ve learned is that the first few minutes feel like just more Alto, which is absolutely great, but the longer you play the more you uncover new and interesting twists on the formula and even at this early stage I’m pretty confident this tops the original Alto’s Adventure in every way. Of course there’s plenty more on offer besides that so give the full list of new games below a thorough look and let us know which games you’ll be playing this week.

TouchArcade

‘Dice Brawl: Captain’s League’ Launching Next Tuesday and Up for Pre-Order Now, Here’s a Sneak Peek

Idiocracy, Inc’s Dice Brawl: Captain’s League is coming next week to iOS. This colorful free to play game is a swashbuckling adventure with some throwback art that is aiming to distinguish itself from some hefty competition. Dice Brawl is a 1v1 pvp game where you face off against a similarly experienced opponent in a pirate duel. You will construct and destroy buildings, cross swords with boss mobs as well as your opponent, and use a deck of cards to sway the fight in your favor. As you progress in your career, you will unlock new cards and gain resources to upgrade your current cards. If you are familiar with Clash Royale [Free], you basically already know how the card and deck system works. If you are not familiar with Clash Royale, welcome to 2018 and this is a mobile video game website, TouchArcade.

Whether you want to talk about Clash Royale’s mass appeal, earnings, or involvement in eSports, there is always something going on with this mobile juggernaut. When it comes to games you may want to emulate, it’s hard to find a game that brings the gacha income and competitive gravitas like Supercell’s successful follow up on their Clash of Clans universe. Make no mistake, Dice Brawl‘s deck management and acquisition system is very strictly modelled after Clash Royale and is definitely hoping to capitalize on the familiarity of that system. Where Dice Brawl is hoping to inject some originality is in the gameplay experience. Instead of a real time strategy-like environment with cards that go back into your hand after being used, Dice Brawl has a finite number of card uses and you’ll be duking it out on a game board moving and fighting at the whim of dice rolls.

We’ll have a review out for Dice Brawl once it releases but in the meantime this is a game that definitely warrants keeping an eye on. The pirate theme, art style that is vaguely reminiscent of Dragon’s Lair, and boardgame like gameplay are key points that we think will help this game escape the large shadow cast by the genre’s founder and predecessor. You can currently pre-order Dice Brawl by clicking this link on an iOS 11 device, if that’s a thing you want to do, otherwise look for the full release next Tuesday, February 20th.

‘Lord of Dice’ Review – A Loaded Gacha Experience

Kakao might not be a game company you are familiar with, but their success overseas has opened doors for them to bring their widely popular gachapon Lord of Dice [Free] to western shores. If you are not instantly familiar with that term gachapon, its basically a reference to free to play games that allow you to collect, level up and evolve your team of fighters to take on ever increasingly strong enemies. These games offer a slow trickle of hero acquisition which can be expedited via the purchase of summoning gems. If you aren’t a fan of this type of free to play model, I can save you some time and say that the formula is followed closely enough that you probably won’t enjoy this game. For those of you who do, however, there is a lot under the hood that this game offers.

In Lord of Dice you operate a team of characters, to which the game dubs ‘Dicers.’ Your character and the other dicers are trapped in the Tower of Inifinty and have lost their memories. In order to escape the tower and regain your memories you need to level up, get strong, and ascend the tower. The story is admittedly rather thin, but the game does not really hinge on the story line progresion. The real strong points of Lord of Dice are the combat and the visual asthetic. LoD has a strong chibi-anime visual style that feeds its combat and dicer animations. Moving around in Lord of Dice feels a lot like Mario Party, where you bounce from spot to spot getting into trouble each turn. The nice thing about LoD is that you can plan out where you end up moving to and end up dishing out most of the trouble to your enemy with a little bit of planning.

The biggest attraction for me in Lord of Dice is the gameplay. What looks like a simple RPG card playing interface belies some gravitas that you would not expect from your typical FTP game. On the surface, you play one of your dicers each turn and you have an attack and a movement that are executed associated with that card. Once you finish your attack and move, opponents can attack you if you are in their range. The next turn you take may be impacted by a special effect your previous card had or by buffs or debuffs that you picked up by landing on them. So far this game doesn’t even have any dice mechanics. The first wrinkle comes in the form of dice battles. Most of the time these battles are triggered by running directly into an enemy before it gets killed by one of your attacks. You select 3 of your dicers to a roll-off with the opponent. There are a slew of special abilities and modifiers but the basic idea is that the high-roller wins and deals damage to the loser.

What you will start to notice is that each dicer has their own types of dice they roll in a fight, sometimes more than one. They also have movement values that are variable, skills that impact the next dicer’s attack if it is the correct type. They have defensive skills, charge skills and these ALL can combine in being much MUCH stronger than a single dicer doing a single attack. It is this complexity that makes me happy I have certain dicers and will actively go back hoping to summon more. These types of synergies mean that there is probably no single “right” way to build a team, which is the pit many gacha games fall into. While there are only about 200 dicers in the game and a solid team is pretty easy to establish, you can keep fishing for more and more perfect versions of dicers to slowly get stronger and build towards specific goals. For example, I love dicers that have 5 move and 1 move values. Melee dicers are especially strong at 5 move and whirlwind dicers are great at 1 move. You might want more 2-4 movement options but I love having the extreme distance spreads so I can chose to either stall or race through areas. This is especially helpful in the raid mode.

Gem acquisition in games like this is sometimes dicey… but Lord of Dice is really generous with the amount of summons you will get. Within about 20 minutes of play you get enough gems to do the big premium summon pack. The first month’s login reward is a 5 star summon and there are enough acheivements to unlock to get you multiple pulls on that big summon pack in your first few days. This is a game I can see investing in heavily, but the primary resource for me is going to be time, not money.

Like most gacha games, you have a main story line game mode as well as pvp, raid, guild, and resource gathering side areas that have separate rewards that mostly reset on a daily or weekly basis. I was not able to find much in the reesource gathering section that felt unique or interesting but the pvp and raid boss fights are both very cool and a lot of fun. Trying out new team strategies for both of these modes proves that the depth of combat in this game has a huge impact on how successful you can be given various combat objectives. The pvp mode usually involves a small loop of squares with buffs and items the replenish after a certain number or rounds that you chase your opponent around. The boss mode can be played either solo or cooperatively with others. Bosses have minions that attack normally as well as large, telegraphed area of effect attacks that can usually be avoided with clever use of your dicers. You don’t really come across a gacha game with as much depth and varied gameplay as Lord of Dice. I guess thats why it has been so successful in other regions prior to the NA release. While the story line and artwork carry some trope-y under tones, There is still a whole lot of game to enjoy here.

The Years in Development ‘Dice Soccer City’ Finally Arriving February 1st

Way back in July of 2011, LambdaMu Games brought us a refreshing mix of dice-rolling and soccer with their very appropriately-titled Dice Soccer. We enjoyed the game a lot in our review from then, but sadly that original Dice Soccer has been lost to the aether of the App Store. In 2014 LambdaMu introduced us to a follow-up title at GDC 2014 called Dice Soccer League which was supposed to launch in time for the World Cup that year. Things didn’t quite pan out, and for the next few years we weren’t really sure what the fate of the next Dice Soccer game would be. Then this past November the developers resurfaced on our forums to introduce Dice Soccer City, and they’ve been beta testing the game with forum members ever since. Well, the time has finally come as this forever-in-development follow-up to Dice Soccer is now slated to launch on February 1st.

We actually did get an early hint at what would ultimately become Dice Soccer City during GDC in March of last year, when the game was tentatively titled Dice Soccer Town. It looks to combine the elements of city-building with sports team management, not unlike many of Kairosoft’s lovely sim-lite titles. Basically, you’ll be building up a city that’s filled with people who love soccer, and then you’ll build out your team from those citizens. So keeping your city morale up and winning matches with your city’s team are crucial in drafting better and better players. It sounds like a neat way to mix two pretty separate genres. For a lot more information check out the game’s forum thread and keep an eye out for Dice Soccer City next Thursday.

‘Lord of Dice’ Pre-Registrations are Now Available for North America and Oceania

Among the many interest things about the mobile game scene is when you hear of a game that’s super popular in Asian regions and then seeing how it does in the west. Arena of Valor [Free], for instance, is the biggest thing ever in China and comparatively has had a super slow launch so far in North America. Lord of Dice is the latest Asian game headed to North America and Oceania, and like all these games, they’re doing a pre-registration thing which you can find right here. Pre-registering gives you all sorts of goodies when the game actually launches, with rewards that scale up depending on how many people pre-register.

As far as the game itself, it looks pretty cool. Basically, Lord of Dice is a collection game which features over 200 different heroes and tactical battles that all play out with dice mechanics. If you’re not into the gacha scene, this likely won’t do a ton for you, but if you’re even remotely interested in these sorts of games it might worth pre-registering anyway just for a head start if you do find yourself getting sucked into Lord of Dice. Oh, and if you want to pre-order the game on the App Store, for some reason, you can do that too although it’s not super clear if you get any of the pre-registration bonuses by doing that.

‘Dice Soccer City’ Combines Kairosoft With Soccer and Is Looking for Beta Testers

LambdaMu, the developer of Pixel People and Dice Soccer, are back with an interesting blend of a game that feels like a Kairosoft game combined with soccer. Dice Soccer City, which we got to see at GDC 2017, brings together town building and deck building mechanics into one charming game. As the developers talk about in our forum thread, you’ll have to oversee your city’s morale and expansion, and by winning games and making your town better, you’ll attract more residents. That’s an interesting gameplay loop that (if done well) can nicely link the building part with the soccer playing part of the game. You’ll then have to recruit those residents and head to a match of Dice Soccer, which is all about teamwork and combos.

The soccer playing side of the game looks fun, with different players having different skills, which makes building the right “deck” of players essential if you want to win. And the game’s visuals are pretty sweet. If you want to become a beta tester for Dice Soccer City, head over to our Upcoming Games forum thread.
