Apple Highlights New Emoji for ‘World Emoji Day’

Today is World Emoji Day, and Apple is celebrating by highlighting several of the 56 new emoji that will hit iOS, macOS and watchOS later this year.

In June, the Unicode Consortium updated its standard to version 10.0.0, a change which also brought a slew of new emoji. Apple, of course, uses the Unicode standard for its operating systems — though it usually takes a few months before Apple adopts the latest version. But Cupertino took the time today to preview some of the incoming new characters in a press release published on Monday, July 17.

Some of the new emoji Apple chose to highlight include a bearded person, a woman with headscarf, an exploding head and starstruck emoji, and a person sitting in meditation posture. Apple also highlighted several of the animals and mythical creatures included in Unicode 10, including a t-rex, a zebra, a zombie and an elf emoji. “With thousands of emoji available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, there are many ways to add personality to every message,” the company added.

Other new emoji included in the standard (but not highlighted by Apple) include a male and female vampire, mage, and fairy; a raised eyebrow emoji also known as the “Colbert” face; several new food items like steak, coconut, pretzel and pie; and some additional clothing item emoji, many of which are specifically winter-themed. Unicode 10 also adds a larger range of child and adult emojis with various modifiers, including for gender and skin tone — which actually brings the total number of new emoji variations and options up to 239.

In addition to previewing some of the new emoji, Apple also gave the iTunes Movies storefront an emoji-themed makeover — featuring a rotating top banner with emoji, rather than text, explaining the titles of select popular movies. The App Store will also join in on the festivities, with the marketplace highlighting apps that can create or “do fun things” with the popular characters.

Apple didn’t expand on its official release date for the new emoji, but they’re expected to roll out alongside the final public release of iOS 11 in the fall.
